Children in the Wilderness Malawi
CITW Malawi is a non-governmental, non-profit organization working in partnership with Central African Wilderness Safaris to provide life skills, education, and opportunity to orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) living in communities around the tourist concessions of Mvuu Camp in Liwonde National Park, and Chinteche Inn in Nkhata Bay. This innovative program draws on child development, teamwork, therapeutic recreation, and positive reinforcement to inspire and motivate Malawi’s underprivileged children.
Children in the Wilderness is looking for an independent, creative and organized individual to fill the role of Executive Director.
The Executive Director is responsible for:
a. The day-to day management of the non-profit Children in the Wilderness program
b. Supervision, management and capacity building of personnel
c. Financial management and proposal writing, fundraising, and publicity
d. Creating and executing annual workplans
e. Program development - ensuring CITW works towards its mandate
f. Building and sustaining partnerships with local communities, donors, private business, and government
g. Reporting to the Board of Directors and working within the Wilderness Safaris environment
The Executive Director should have the following requirements:
1. A university degree; preferably in child development, social work, or education
2. The ability to manage and communicate with people in a cross-cultural setting
3. Financial management skills
4. Excellent English writing and speaking skills (Chichewa preferred but not required)
5. Excellent computer skills
6. 2 years managerial experience
7. Experience developing and evaluating intentional children’s programming
8. The ability to work independently and as a team player
9. The willingness to travel (approx. 10 weeks out of the year)
10. Experience in a “summer camp” atmosphere
This is a demanding full-time position based in Lilongwe. Applicants able to commit to at least two years are preferred. The position will start in January 2007.
